There have been occasional opportunities to create custom digital paint and hand drawn imagery to support ABC News business storytelling. Australian financial news print media and global publications such as The Economist have a tradition of producing playful, striking, and provocative imagery for their viewers. We tried to reference this tradition with more subtle imagery and a hand crafted feel.

Aside from pencil and paper I used Clip Studio Paint and a Surface Book to create the artworks. Being a news environment, time was often very limited so this work has also been an exercise in delivering to a tight deadline.

Online news articles promoted with an illustration had a consistently higher viewership than those with typical news photos and stock images.
